GLOBE History

In the early 1990s, late Professor Robert J. House from Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, who was a visiting professor at Gustavson School of Business at the time, conceived the idea of a large-scale international study of cultural, leadership and organizational practices. His host, Gustavson Business School’s, late Dr. Ali Dastmalchian, together with his colleague Dr. Mansour Javidan, were the first to begin data collection in the Middle East for what would become the GLOBE 2004 Culture & Leadership Study which included data from more than 17,000 middle managers in 62 countries/societies. The next phase of GLOBE, driven by Dr. Peter Dorfman culminated in the GLOBE 2014 CEO Study, which collected data from over 1,000 CEOs and over 5,000 senior executives in corporations in a variety of industries from 24 countries/societies. GLOBE is now in the midst of the GLOBE 2020 Culture, Trust & Leadership Study, directed by Dr. Javidan, which has collected data from more than 62,000 managerial respondents in 144 countries/societies and every major industry.

GLOBE History

The Global Leadership & Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project now includes more than 400 researchers from more than 140 countries/societies. These countries/societies represent more than 99% of the world’s population and more than 96% of the world’s GDP making GLOBE a truly global project. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of hundreds of researchers, GLOBE has become one of the largest, most prestigious and most comprehensive studies of its kind in the social sciences.

The GLOBE project has become a leader with award-winning books, more than 400 academic and practice-oriented journal articles, a massive database of cultural, leadership and trust data, and GLOBE scores and insights have been utilized by university scholars, instructors, diplomats, leaders, managers, and human resource professionals around the world.
